Ytterbium Oxide is a highly insoluble thermally stable Ytterbium source suitable for glass, optic Ultra High Purity (99.99+%) Oxide Powder and ceramic applications. Ytterbium Oxide is generally immediately available in most volumes. Ultra high purity, high purity, submicron and nanopowder forms may be considered. Ytterbium is applied to fiber amplifier and fiber optic technologies and in lasing applications. It has a single dominant absorption band at 985 in the infra-red useful in silicon photocells to convert radiant energy to electricity. Oxide compounds are not conductive to electricity. However, certain perovskite structured oxides are electronically conductive finding application in the cathode of solid oxide fuel cells and oxygen generation systems. Rare Earth oxide compounds are basic anhydrides and can therefore react with acids and with strong reducing agents in redox reactions. They are compounds containing at least one oxygen anion and one metallic cation. They are typically insoluble in aqueous solutions (water) and extremely stable making them useful in ceramic structures as simple as producing clay bowls to advanced electronics and in light weight structural components in aerospace and electrochemical applications such as fuel cells in which they exhibit ionic conductivity. Ytterbium oxide is also available in pellets, pieces, powder, sputtering targets, and tablets. Additional technical, research and safety (MSDS) information is available.

Ytterbium has 2 valency state, +2 +3. The electronic configuration is [Xe]4f146s2. In its metallic form Ytterbium's CAS number is 7440-64-4 and its standard state @ 20 ºC is a solid. The Ytterbium atom has a radius of 194 pm and it's Van der Waals radius is unknown. On the periodic table, Ytterbium is a Block F, Group 3, Period 6 element.
