About Holmium Shavings

Holmium ShavingsHolmium shavings are a byproduct of milling and grinding metal operations. Shavings are produced from the shaving or cutting of metal and then collected for recycling. American Elements specializes in producing high purity Holmium Shavings with the smallest possible average grain sizes for use in preparation of pressed and bonded sputtering targets and in Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) processes including Thermal and Electron Beam (E-Beam) Evaporation, Low Temperature Organic Evaporation, Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), Metallic-Organic and Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD). Holmium Shavings are thin strips of ribbons. Shavings are also useful in any application where high surface areas are desired such as water treatment and in fuel cell and solar applications. Nanoparticles also produce very high surface areas. Our standard Shavings particle sizes average in the range of - 325 mesh, - 100 mesh, 10-50 microns and submicron (< 1 micron). We can also provide many materials in the nanoscale range. Materials are produced using crystallization, solid state and other ultra high purification processes such as sublimation. American Elements specializes in producing custom compositions for commercial and research applications and for new proprietary technologies. American Elements also casts any of the rare earth metals and most other advanced materials into rod, bar, or plate form, as well as other machined shapes and through other processes such as nanoparticles and in the form of solutions and organometallics. We also produce Holmium as rod, ingot, pieces, pellets, disc, granules, wire, and in compound forms, such as oxide. Other shapes are available by request. Nanocrystalline structures have been found in metal shavings, which possess traits of high strength and wear resistance.

Holmium Bohr ModelThe number of electrons in each of Holmium's shells is [2, 8, 18, 29, 8, 2] and its electron configuration is [Xe] 4f11 6s2. Elemental Holmium PictureThe holmium atom has a radius of 176 pm and its Covalent radius is 192±7 pm. Holmium was first discovered by Marc Delafontaine in 1878. In its elemental form, holmium has a silvery white appearance. It is relatively soft and malleable. It is stable in dry air at room temperature but rapidly oxidizes at elevated temperatures and in moist air. Holmium has unusual magnetic properties. Its name is derived from the Latin word Holmia meaning Stockholm.
