American Elements manufacturers a complete line of metallic and fluoride compound additives for producing SAE steel grades, alloys and super alloy compositions, including materials essential to various stages of the desulfurizing and refining process. American Elements also supports new research & development programs at such steelmakers as ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel to reduce both CO2 emissions and lower energy consumption.

Next generation products include rare earth and refractory fluoride micropowders that improve the introduction of these elements during the steelmaking process.

The Challenge

The development of new structural steels is essential to our long term future. For example, stronger steels mean less steel is required to build a pipeline or a skyscraper which in turn means less steel needs to be smelted leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions. So when the world’s largest steel producer, ArcelorMittal, turned to American Elements to design its next generation grades of steel, we were happy to oblige.

The Innovation

Working with ArcelorMittal researchers, we provided nanoscale raw materials to the new steel development program, including cobalt, copper and nickel nanoparticles of several diameters each and unique process flow materials such as tungsten tubing.

The Result

Nanoparticles have proven to strengthen steel by making it harder to deform reducing the amount of steel required in numerous applications, such as automotive applications.
