About Trifluoromethanesulfonates

Trifluoromethanesulfonates (or Triflates) are compounds containing the triflate ion, CF3SO3- and are derived from trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TFMS). Metallic triflates are thermally stable and often act as Lewis acid catalysts in organic chemical reactions. Lanthanide (rare earth) trifluoromethanesulfonates are particularly useful for this application based on their low toxicity, water-solubility, and ability to be recovered for reuse. These properties, along with others, make the lanthanide triflates important green alternatives to other catalyst materials.
